The Controversy Bulb GARLIC

When youre like me and have a small A/P system that is used as a test unit, and its laying idle....

Anyhow I tossed a couple of Garlic cloves at the gravel Growbed last week. So yesterday when I was checking it...Damn, will you look at that. One of them has a 1 1/2" shoot...

Now what do I do...?

They are three quarters covered by 3/4"gravel so I dug in and the roots look really good and thick. Covered it again. lets see what transpires. Ill keep you posted.

But back to the Notebook and a sad tale(tail)

Now I am pretty geeky and have never grown a thing in my life. I am much more comfortable with silicon and solder than dirt and water

We have harvested some Pak Choi, Watercress, Snow Peas, Beetroot, Zucchinis, Celery, Potatoes, Lettuce,Tomatoes, Basil, Parsley,Garlic, Tang O and Vietnamese Coriander and Goji leaves. We have experimented with...

Root crops?

What about root crops? No problem, although you are probably better off growing potatoes in the ground, they will...

I am a fan of aquaponics . My solution is a hybrid of classic ... Beetroot, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Garlic, Capsicum, Spinach, Leek, ..More...

Aquaponics is a hybrid of hydroponics and fish farming. ... tomatoes, silver beet, herbs and garlic as well as water plants like taro and water chestnuts. ...

Many different varieties of crops can be grown in the
aquaponics system including: lettuce, endive, broccoli,
cabbage, cauli?ower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy,
cucumber, squash, melon, mint, basil, lavender, thyme,
dill, watermelon, spinach, chard, arugula, tomato,
pepper, onion, leek, garlic, chives, corn, beans, peas and
?owering plants.DONT MISS THIS ONE...

I hope that will take care of your enthusiasm for Aquaponics for a couple of days.

September Is Going Too Quickly

Now the weather is warming up here in Australia its a great time to plant Basil, tomatoes, chillies,  Zucchini, Shallots, Capsicum and Im going to try my hand at Celery as well. That will take care of all the space I have presently in the grow beds. What can I say - Little fishies do your thing...

Now to the note book:

From around the world we are learning more and more how others are creating their own models of sustainability.

This is a 365 day journal of our harvest from our aquaponics system

Afnan is getting quite prolific in print and in A/P

The solutions to the most pressing problems of our day don’t necessarily have to be complex and expensive

Now from the NEWS TRIBUNE - People came from near and far to attend the Missouri Renewable Energys Labor Day Energy Fair in New Bloomfield

Go behind the scenes at Milwaukee’s new aquaponics farm and market

Once a week, for three hours, students in the fisheries and aquaculture program at VIU take care of the universitys first aquaponics project

3 Advantages of Aquaponics Over Anything Else!

Have you heard about The Science Barge

I am trying to keep up with Slywoman, her latest (I think)  - Aquaponics, This and That

Going Bananas

Truly Tiny Banana Plant

Ive heard of folks in warmer climates growing banana and papaya trees, but didnt think I could hope to do so here in Virginia.

But I happened across the GreenEarth website. Hes got two dwarf banana varieties I could grow in my short greenhouse, and a third variety, California Gold, that should survive outside in the winters here (Im in Zone 7a). Heres the description for the Truly Tiny Banana Plant, which Im thinking of trying out:

Delightful small banana that has a beautiful form. Grows only to about 2 - 3 feet in height. Excellent houseplant. Great as a groundcover or as a container plant. Likes generally warm conditions, bright light, moist soil. Fast grower that quickly attains full size. A miniature version of the Dwarf Cavendish Banana. Grows only 24" tall. Great tasting bananas. Easy to grow, indoors or out! Zone 8-11. Great house or patio plant. approx. 6" to 8" plant.

Now thats sweet!

Contagious Aquaponics

My Moms Greenhouse

My Mom was visiting a couple of weeks ago and the conversation turned to aquaponics. Naturally. Turned out shed had plans to do a garden this year, but her yard space got pre-empted by recession-related events in the lives of relatives. But she still has full use of her 10x12 greenhouse.

By the end of the weekend, Id set her up with bell siphons and lots of information. Shes started her own blog over at utahponics.blogspot.com, should you wish to see how shes doing things.

She liked my rubbermaid stock tanks, but already has a bunch of sturdy bins that might work, plumbed together in series. Also, she lives in a climate where termites and moisture are less problematic, so she can consider using wood in the structure of her tank and beds.

She also has a surplus swamp cooler, so is considering doing cold-water aquaponics (trout and cold weather vegetables). Pretty fun!
