Paper Pot Maker and Planting

Seeds in their Paper Pots

The problem with starting an indoor garden in early winter is there are no seedlings for sale.

Frankly, its pretty hard to find seeds.

I was resigned to simply planting more of the seeds Id bought earlier this year (i.e., nasty-tasting lettuce, blech). Luckily for me, I happened to drive by Browns Hardware in Falls Church, VA - a small hardware store that has "existed longer than General Motors - without a bankruptcy." They had a nice collection of seeds still available, so I bought many of the varieties Id been ogling over at GourmetSeed.com. Less expensive and no shipping (and no wait).

In my internet searches, Id come across the idea of starting plants in recycled pots - most elegantly paper pots created from strips of newspaper using a cool turned wooden tool, a Pot Maker.

Problem was a Pot Maker runs about $20 and Id have to wait...

Instead I decided to use a bottle I already had at home. A spice bottle would have worked nicely, but I used an old pill bottle.

First I cut strips 3 1/2" by 16" (I suppose I could have gotten by with 10").

Next I rolled the strip around the bottle so that the free ends would slightly overlap one another when I folded them down. Just because it seemed a good idea, I spiraled the free edge, so that the folded edges were interleaved one ply thickness at a time. I also dipped the free edge in water, in hopes that this might help the plies mesh together.

After tamping the (slightly wet) end of the bottle on the table, I gently slid the paper pot off the bottle and put a single staple in the top edge, where the end of the newspaper tended to gap.

Filled the pot with vermiculite (organic, no added miracle grow) and added fish tank water to each pot. This was water from one of the windowfarm fish tanks, full of fishy goodness.

Rinse and repeat 11 times.

Finally, I planted a single seed in each pot and put a plastic cloche over the whole thing, to keep in moisture. If not all the seeds germinate, thatll be fine. Ill have opportunity to start additional seedlings if need be, and my tilapia fry (or fingerlings) wont get here until January.

The Queensland Floods

Some people will be aware that this issue is rather late. Because we live in Caboolture which is in South East Queensland we have just been caught in what is this states biggest disaster for a century. Fortunately we came out of it OK unlike so many others. As it turned out we were hammered with rain a day earlier than the the Brisbane and Toowoomba storms. We were completely surrounded and of course isolated however the water only reached our verandah and started to subside within 3 hours. The problem for us was we already were cut off as you would have seen from the last photos. So yesterday everyone received messages from disaster H.Q. to get out but we were already stuck so we had to sit it out. Which really meant moving every bit of machinery to the highest possible location around the house.

I feel nothing but the deepest sympathy to all of the others who have lost loved ones and homes and all their personal belongings. One thing is certain, the fighting spirit and will to return and rebuild, will make these people determined to rise above what they are feeling through this time.

I wasnt here for the 74 floods but was a young, early teenager during the Maitland floods and helped with the cleanup there. Just like this time, the strength, solidarity and grim determination kicked in and everybody learned to pitch in for the common good.

Raised bed gardening has benefits for all
By KAROL KELLY - Special to The Telegraph
For gardeners, the winter months are a time when they can slow down and regroup for the upcoming growing season. For vegetable gardeners this means soil testing, investigating new vegetable varieties, shopping for seeds and planning the layout for a spring garden. One developing trend among local gardeners is the use of raised beds for vegetable gardening. This is a popular method for community gardens, urban gardeners, working families, senior citizens and even new gardeners.

Companion Planting

2009 Native American Dollar, obverse
Planting the "Three Sisters" - corn, beans, squash

I was chatting with a colleague, asking what they do when they arent working for a wage.

Turns out they have a half acre where they practice intensive gardening. They have 39 solar panels that produce 4.5 kW of electricity and tanks to hold up to 2000 gallons of water, along with an osmosis and UV treatment system so their water meets USDA standards for safe drinking water.

So cool!

Ive spent some time checking out online resources for intensive gardening. I was particularly pleased by three of the resources I stumbled across:

1) VEGETABLE GARDEN: INTENSIVE GARDENING METHODS, a page at the Arizona Cooperative Extension website. They have an extensive table listing plant spacings for intensive gardening, a method for calculating the distance between companion plantings in such a garden, and a list of the top 15 vegetables from an economic value standpoint.

2) Companion Planting: So Happy Together! by Kelle Carter, in the April 2006 issue of the Seeds of Change eNewsletter. Kelles article is informative and easy to read. And she includes a HUGE list of plants, good companion plants, and the effects of the suggested companions. Awesome!

3) Companion Planting post over at Emilys My Square Foot Garden. Emily has a spreadsheet that lets you figure out companion plants for a single crop or what third plant would work if you already have two other crops in that same space. I like that she tells you what plants to not plant next to one another, as well as giving degrees of goodness.
