How To Sex Tilapia

Left is male/right is female
Sexing tilapia is sometimes important
So once your aquaponics is set up and all the problems are solved and the vegetables are growing, the fish is happy and then...you think, well I think I am finally at a point that I can sell some of my fish. (note once you do this it might ruin the great hobby of it and turn it into business of it. youll see) So to get the best results and profit you will need to figure out whats what in the tilapia sex world.

Most farmers wish to only cultivate males. Male tilapias grow bigger faster and yield a higher profit for aquacultures. So as soon as possible the males are recognized and the females are separated out. Sexing of tilapia is tricky and requires practice. Even experienced professionals will normally get a small percent wrong.

When a tilapia fingerling has reached a weight of 1 ounce it can generally be sexed by looking at the genital papilla. The genital papilla is located right behind the anus of the fish. If the genital papilla has one opening you are looking at a male tilapia.

Males have only one opening and both urine and milt will pass through this hole. If you observe two openings, then you are looking at a female tilapi. This is because tilapia eggs do not pass through the same hole as urine.

If youre inexperienced and are having a hard time, try placing a drop of dye, such as food coloring  on the genital region. The color should make it easier to distinguish the openings.

We usually place the females in another tank and from there we can decide to continue to let them breed (most of the time) or sell or give them away. If you have chickens, these small fish are perfect snacks and add high protein to the poultrys diet. It doesnt give the eggs a bad taste either as long as you are not feeding the chicken only fish for its diet. We suggest giving the females away to young people as a introduction to aquaponics and gardening.

If you are looking for tilapia, that is fairly easy.
You can find it in the search engines by putting in "where to buy tilapia".

I use two different companies and both seem to have good prices and great quality.

Ardusat Update 2014 15 High School Students Working With Live Arduinos In Space

This is an update on the Ardusat program which was mentioned in a July post, "Skys Not The Limit For Arduinos In Space."
Ardusat (from Kickstarter)

In an August 27 press release, Ardusat announced that their Arduino satellites program is now available globally for K-12 students and teachers. ReadWrite has a pretty good article about Ardusat and their program in the recent post titled "Soon Students Will Be Able To Control Satellites In Space." It starts out with a overview of what the program consists of:
"...Ardusat is publicly launching a program to offer "space kits" with programmable sensors that it will place in small satellites in partnership with commercial satellite company Spire. The space kits cost $2,500, but the company has made the curriculum and online resources available for free...Ardusat is running a science competition beginning Sept. 2 to provide 15 high schools with a free space kit and the opportunity to work directly with an astronaut...more than two dozen schools are currently using Ardusat, and with its public launch, the kits are available to everyone...Ardusats “space kits” contain an Arduino board—a cheap, widely available circuit board for DIY electronics projects—and multiple sensors that can be programmed to capture data on temperature, luminosity, and magnetic fields. The students can program the sensors using Arduino to test scientific hypotheses based on
Ardusat exploded view (from Kickstarter)
data that can be measured from satellite orbit—for example, finding the relationship between El NiƱo weather conditions and the ocean temperature near their schools...Satellite sensors will capture data and send it back to students in real-time, so classrooms can monitor how the experiment is performing each day.
"
The ReadWrite post also talks about one specific teacher and class thats working with the Ardusat program:
"Rachelle Romanoff is a physics and chemistry teacher...This year, Romanoff is bringing Ardusat to her 10th and 12th grade classrooms. Her AP Physics students are so excited to program sensors in space, some students enrolled in the class just for this particular project—she now has 23 students in the class...Because students can configure the sensors in real time, Romanoff says shell be using Ardusat throughout the school year. Students will write code to then send to the satellites housing their particular project. It will be crucial in helping students understand concepts like electricity and magnetic fields. The satellites will send the data back down to Earth, and students can collect and view the data on their iPads, and make graphs out of the information received from space to observe patterns or work out hypotheses...As the Ardusat programming gets more advanced, and more satellites become available for students, Ardusat envisions more technical experiments like thunderstorm tracking."
I took an AP Physics class in high school, and would have loved it if wed had access to sensors and microcontrollers (MCUs) on a satellite orbiting the earth. Can you imagine the cool projects a few creative, imaginative and determined K-12 student hackers will be doing in a few years on Ardusats system and other cube sats or other type of education or general public satellites that get launched and have this level of access. Instead of writing "Space Invaders" in BASIC and playing it on Apple II or other early PCs, theyll be programming MCUs with the Arduino IDE (integrated development environment) or other program development tools to play real-time "Orbital Space Spy," gathering real-life data in space and figuring out how to capture and package information that lets them become globally-recognized experts on their area of interest or sell information to governments or corporations.
Early breadboard circuitry for Ardusat (from ExtremeTech)

Like many other developer platforms, the truly valuable and innovative outcomes from widespread access to microcontrollers, sensors and other related satellite components that can capture or generate information or physical products in space will be things that the satellite launch companies never expected. Students, teachers and others with access to this space equipment will first do weird, fun and somewhat pointless things with the equipment, as well as activities initially envisioned by Ardusats and other organizations, such as thunderstorm tracking. True hackers rarely work on ideas suggested by someone else as being valuable or appropriate. Theyd rather work eight or twelve hours a day on
something they came up with on their own, something that fully engages them, something that no one else is doing as far as they know. Or something interesting to them that they think they can do much better than someone else.

The initial sensors in the Space Kit are listed on the Ardusat website as luminosity sensor, temperature sensor, magnetometer, ultra violet light sensor, infrared thermopile, and photoresistor. But Im guessing Ardusats have a few more sensors onboard, either for testing or for unveiling at a future time to maintain interest in the program. Early on those student hackers will also come up with additional MCUs and related components that should be added to the next satellite launched, with a clear explanation of how those MCUs and components will be used. At least one of the student hacker improvements will end up able to accomplish the purported task, but will turn out to have unexpected capabilities, either because someone figured out a new way to use the equipment or because the slightly-devious student hacker planned to use those capabilities all along but was intelligent enough to not tell people that before the equipment was launched into
space. These escapades will bring us ever closer to the day when scifi like "Space Cadet" by Robert Heinlein and "Live Free or Die" by John Ringo will be eclipsed by true life stories.

We havent reached the hockey-stick inflection point yet for democratization of the civilian aerospace sector, but programs like Ardusat are getting us a lot closer to the tipping point. If you work with STEM programs at K-12 schools, I highly recommend you consider getting involved with Ardusat. And if youre a student hacker interested in space, I recommend you start planning your personal participation in off-planet computing.

Test Update

Down in the test beds:
  • Tomatoes are doing ok although the location could have been better as they are showing signs of needing more sun.
  • They are all just into bud and the only other problem (remember they are on raft) is that there were some strong winds three weeks ago and the plants (now about four feet tall) twisted around a few times. This, with the wind also trying to blow them sideways, has caused the plants to corkscrew up out of the water by about two to three inches. Not sure if this will affect their growth as that couple of inches of roots look like fine cord or rope. Ha ha maybe Ive invented a new twine....
  • The Garlic are looking good, I planted them with about 1/3 of the clove under the gravel. After they had sent down their roots, I cleared away enough gravel so that I could just see the roots.....
  • Cucumber and Zucchini are both doing well.
Now back to work/play....:

We lead off with what appears to be a little A/P greenhouse BUT PREPARE TO BE SURPRISED

Where Oh Where have all the Fridays gone

Before I retired I used to look forward all week for Friday. This was the big goal in my life and Friday was always the longest day of the week. Now all that has gone. Now every day could be almost the same as every other day. So we need to be careful. Making sure that there is enough variety in our week so we can always differentiate between them. You know, when you think about it, Possibly its things like lost Fridays that could be a contributing factor in elderly illnesses and maybe depression. Golleeee Maybe Ive just had a medical breakthrough.

Aquaponics Silver Perch update

I recently ran out of fish feed, so Ive been hand feeding them worms, and what ever they call fly larvae in whatever part of the world you live.  They are called "gents" here when bought as bait, or stored in a fridge shared with people who dont want maggots in their fridge. "Maggots" when found in smelly stuff.

The point is, as a result of feeding them live food like worms, gents, and caterpillars, they are venturing a bit further up the water column to the point where they are now easy to photograph.

This guy is pretty big.

And heavy looking.

It looks like this up close.

I have no idea how big or how heavy it is, but Ill try to get a photo next to a ruler.

I wont try to weigh it because I cant think of a way to do it without stressing it.

Ill weigh it if I ever eat it.

Systems Update

Im building an 800 gallon tank (128" long by 36" wide and 50" deep) with a 250 gallon wet dry sump tank and 30 sq ft grow bed.  Ill have about 1000 gallons of water in this 900 cu ft room!  Basically 15% of the room will be filled with water.  The proportions may not seem correct, but I do not intend to raise the fish in a maximum population configuration.  Happy fish and stable temps are my goal.

I was going to use IBCs, but I want to maximize the space I have in the grow room Im building, and now plan to custom build the tanks with EPDM.

Life is getting a little busy, but I hope to have the tank done. and filled next week.  I can hardly wait!   Ive learned my lesson about cycling and want to get the process started.

I set up a 30 gallon tank last week and thought could barrow some bacteria from my pond. Well heres a little insight on that.  It appears that during the Winter the bacteria go very dormant or die.  I added fish, but the filter was not ready.  Let me tell you its no picnic having to do 25% water changes at least once a day to maintain a <1% ammonia level.

I added Aqua Gold yesterday and today I added Nite Out ii.  Within two hours of adding the Nite Out ii the ammonia began to drop!  Good stuff, but my friend Fred may still be right about the Aqua Gold.  Between the two of them it looks like I can relax.

I started to build a wet/dry sump tonight.   The little filter I have on the 30 gallon tank is not going to be able to handle the  population much longer.  Below is the design.

I dont want to take a chance on a siphon over the side to the sump tank. .It will be my first time drilling a hole in glass, but I have two 30 gallon tanks and Im feeling confident that it will go well.

The 3 grades of Matala Filter Media is placed as shown above the water level and under the drip pan.  The larger section is the refugium and water level section.   It may seem wrong, but this is the direction Matala Filter Media is supposed to be used

Trent severn waterway ♒♒♒ ♒♒♒♒ ♒♒♒ ♒♒♒

I tell ya, one of the first things that caught my attention when looking for houses in the area was the Trent waterway. Not that when your looking for houses you say,
its just gota have a river, no river, no deal!.

But honestly, it doesnt hurt.

While driving to Toronto in the spring we would pass the Trents locking system around Cambleford; this was the year Foxboro just about turned into Atlantis and the Trent waterway was a torrent of such epic proportions that even Odin would be impressed.
Things have calmed now, there is peace in the air,
but its beauty and power continue on.

There used to be a car in this photo and its actually really easy to see the correction area if you zoom in. This can be your (wheres waldo) of the day, Have fun!

When I arrived there was a good 50-100 birds. They all took off after a few minutes and I got this shot, I NEED A TELEPHOTO, I KNOW.

I was thinking of trying to photoshop out the orange fencing but hey, for a blog, its Onatural.

As you walk down the stairs theres a small man made wetlands area to the right growing native plants/grasses. Its really neatly done, reminds me of a Babylonian water garden in a small way.
(As shown below)

Here is where a lot of people seem to like fishing, makes sense, Ive watched a few River monsters shows now to understand, there always seems to be either big fish or something worth while around these fast flowing lock systems. Not just locks, but any little torrent like areas in the river.
I suppose its one of those things, once youve seen it done before, you know where to look.
Thanks River Monsters!  *chuckles

This cloud makes me hungry for marshmallows
Mmmmmmm.......... Homemade marshmallows...

NOT ANOTHER UPDATE

YES BUT JUST A QUICKIE..

Ive forgotten what they call them in England, but the Zuchinis as well as the cucumbers are powering on again now that the Nitrates are climbing. Its amazing how quickly they have turned around.

I should mention I did give everything a dose of Iron Chelate and Im delighted how quickly they color up after this wonderful stuff. Its like Angel Dust for Aquaponic grown plants that are showing yellowing, veiny leaves.

 Its notebook time...

I thought I might take on the Bio-digester and throw up some sites to deliver an explanation about the principles.  Let me say first of all, if you have set up an Aquaponics system with gravel or expanded clay as your growing medium and you have the system in balance, you dont need a digester. If however you are putting together a system with floating rafts, you will have to have some form of digester so on with todays tour of the net.

First a Commercial look at digesters and the principals behind their existance..

Here is an extremely exaustive PDF on this important subject.

Im now going to include two sites that give two views and perspectives. They are both giving their views on commercial undertakings, but each of them show several different slants and are worthy of digesting (sorry about the pun). As I was researching todays Blog, I became very aware of the way modern commercial aquaponic systems have become so complex that they could become unviable.

The first is Semper Aquatic Food Exports

Next this approach from Aqua Biologics

Next I would like us all to consider the fundamental reasons for embarking on the Aquaponic and sustainability road. This next site shows a number of videos, some of them may make you feel a bit uncomfortable but they will also remind us of the state of this planet and many of the communities that can be helped through the push for Aquaponics and a more sustainable approach in all things human, by humans, for humans and it only takes an effort by people with time on their hands.

Now a little closer to home...

Aquaponics and Organic Gardening

Im going to blackout proof my planned, larger, aquaponics system by building an electrical backup.

By the time this blog is posted, I’ll be on the Big Island in Hawaii getting a fast-track immersion in aquaponics

I find barbed wire around the chicken coop and throw it on the other side of the fence to get out of the way, of coarse you know who wants to play with it.

THE FUTURE WITH A P and Why Not

Local community makes UH D.C. exhibit shine

July 6, 2012  |  Tracy Matsushima  |  0 Comments
The University of Hawai?i has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to its exhibit tents during this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
Visitors have tried hula, lauhala weaving and taro pounding. They also learned about navigating by the stars, lomi lomi, aquaponics and taro patches.
The exhibit, however, has been about more than the University of Hawai?i. It has been about the community working together.
UH M?noa alumnus Rick Barboza co-owns Hui K? Maoli Ola, one of the largest Native Hawaiian plant nurseries in Hawai?i. The company transported the taro patch exhibit and aquaponics plants free of charge.

Is Aquaponics the Way We’ll Farm In the Future?

Aquaponics has been on my “Must Learn More About This” list for a long while. So when I found out Garden Fresh Farms in nearby Maplewood was giving free tours of their aquaponics facility, I signed right up to go. The tour was scheduled for the middle of a week day and Maplewood is a pretty long drive out of the Twin Cities, so I didn’t expect much of a crowd. Whew! I was so wrong.

Aquaponics – Growing Plants from Seed

I had heard about aquaponics from some gardening friends and the idea stayed with me long enough to do something about.
This long cold Melbourne Winter has been an opportune time to assemble a wonderful collection of posts about my experiences with an aquaponics method for food production. These will be published in an almost sequential order over the next couple of years…
If you want to learn more about aquaponics and how to go about doing this for yourself, I can recommend the following resources that were a benefit to me:

CHICAGO, July 6, 2012 (AFP) - Urban farming is being taken to new heights in an abandoned Chicago pork processing plant where environmentalists hope to "get off the grid" by using the waste from one crop to feed and power another.
Schools of tilapia swim in water cleaned by the roots of leafy greens that feed on the nitrogen and other nutrients in the fish waste.
A bakery will later move in that will be able to use mash from the brewery upstairs to fire its oven.

From Slaughterhouse to Aquaponics Farm

Blog
Peer Foods, former owners of a meatpacking and slaughterhouse business abandoned a factory in the Union Stock Yards, Chicago. Plant Chicago recently bought the facility and started to restore it. Using a complex interrelated system, The Plant will create 125 jobs in the particularly economically distressed Back of the Yards Chicagoan neighborhood.

Not only is The Plant creating new job opportunities and restoring a prominent building, the whole organization will be self sufficient in energy needs.

Aquaponics and the Homeless

Hi,

Over the past several years, Ive read about a variety of aquaponics endeavours (like this one) that have sought to provide aquaponically-grown food to homeless people.

With the short growing cycles involved, it seems like a no-brainer....in terms of food production.

With some more integrations (a la Microponics), it has even greater potential.......particularly if

Aquaponics differs in many ways from conventional agriculture and other kinds of factory farming.
I have made a chart of the differences between aquaponics and conventional agriculture:
Conventional AgricultureAquaponics
Conventional AgricultureAquaponics
Grows crops in soil. Does not grow crops in soil. Grows crops in recirculated fish waste water, either on its own with the crop plants suspended at the surface in plastic net pots on floating polystyrene rafts, or suspended in the flowing water by an intert growing media fill such as expanded clay balls (Hydroton or Hydroleca brands) or pea gravel.
Uses artificial fertilizer from a natural gas (methane) or methane from oil refining feedstock.Does not use artificial fertilizer. Nitrates dissolved in the recirculating fish water from the intensive fish farm, flowing through the grow beds or floating raft deep water containers fertilize the plants. The source of these nitrates is the ammonia excreted by the fish in the intensive tank-based fish farm part of the aquaponic recirculating aquaculture system. Aquaponics uses liquid organic fertilizer sourced via the solids removal and mineralization section from the fish excreta. Fish excrete ammonia through their gills and a certain amount is also dissolved

Sweet Water Organics, the Bay View aquaponics farm, is a media darling. But scrutiny of the local startup business, which angles to be a leader in a globally emerging urban agriculture industry, reveals a darker tale.
