What a Wicked Wet Wednesday

Wonderful Watery Wednesday
Yes we are still getting regular downpours so we have plenty of water in the seven tanks (plus the bore water) But Really, How much water can a puddle hold...

Now, lets see what I can find to amuse all my friends this time around....

                                                        ...oooOooo...

Have you joined Aquaponic Garden yet? Well, heres one young man who has....

It is not formidable to pattern a simple aquaponic complement which can be placed indoors or outdoors. The options ye have been to squeeze a readymade pack or get the components from your internal hardware plus hobby supply stores plus set up the section yourself.
What have been the components of a simple aquaponics system?

                                                        ...oooOooo...

In the middle of the semester, we became discouraged with our initial project.  We were starting to tackle a problem in our own lives, but felt we weren’t learning or exploring enough.  Around the same time, we came across Elle Sheiferstein’s Aquaponics project, Green Farmed Foods on youtube.  Elle came to Baltimore from New York initially to rehab old rowhomes and create housing.  When she came across the Old Augenbrack Beer Brewery she initially wanted to

From E-Zine Articles:
You can design an aquaponics at home system that can produce fresh organic vegetables and raise fish at the same time. Taking a lesson from fish farming otherwise known as aquaculture and the practice of raising plants without soil known as hydroponics a marriage of the two worlds are created to form aquaponics.
Aquaponics at home can be a very basic system designed to grow a small herb garden or an aggressive system designed to raise organic vegetables to feed an entire household.

Well, getting ready for some new catfish so we moved the aquarium outdoors to become the new Quarantine Aquaponics system.
We decided the big aquarium indoors was too much moisture for the house and we needed more storage space in the spare room. Well why not set it up outside? I did add a cover in front to keep the sun off the tank as the algae would otherwise have taken over and heated up the tank quickly.

 From Articlesbase:
It is not difficult to design a basic aquaponic system that can be placed indoors or outdoors. The options you have are to purchase a readymade kit or get the components from your local hardware and hobby supply stores and build the unit yourself.
What are the components of a basic aquaponics system?
  1. A fish tank with fish, the size you select will be determined by where you locate it and the scope of your system.
  2. A grow bed with plants, there is no limit here in terms of what you can grow, it will depend on your goals, the type of water flow and the space you have dedicated to the aquaponics system.
  3. A water pump and filtration system, it is vital that a perfect....

From The College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources:
One of the best kept secrets in the University of Hawaii System is the aquaculture research
and extension complex that is nestled in the mauka corner of Windward Community College
and State Hospital campuses. Beginning in 2009 CTAHR’s aquaculture research and extension
program began to include aquaponic technologies, which integrates aquaculture and hydroponic
food production methods. It is currently being used as....

A word from Murray Hallum:We’re very excited about this next DVD offering from Practical Aquaponics Murray Hallam because its something that he’s been asked to do continually over the years by many people who want to build their own aquaponics system.

From 120 Things in 20 Years: Aquaponics - Pump-less cycling Success!
Sometimes, I know things like cycling a pile of gravel should work, but Im still surprised when they actually do.
After shovelling 3/4 of the gravel into my grow bed, I got lazy and went to bed. But I thought Id try getting a head start to cycling up my system as gravel in a grow bed, and a pile of gravel on the ground.

Some Videos from HOWSTUFFWORKS: The big trend in produce farming is to move it indoors and grow the plants hydroponically. This offers the same kind of advantages in terms of water consumption, weather and consistency, and also opens up the possibility of urban farming. Here is an example of an advanced hydroponic lettuce farm:

From Can You Feed Your Family With Aquaponics?
Thanks for all these great aquaponic links and ideas.  Thank you, Jag, for the film clip.  The man, Hobie, whom the speaker is most directly conversing is a long time friend of mine.  The plant he is featuring, taro, is an important one of our staples.
My favorite part of focusing my efforts and concerns on food production, is that it makes me happy.  Cultivating life around us, is so much more joyful and fulfilling than stressing about the rise of fascism and an impending economic collapse.  ... I do both, rejoice in the abundant biology around me and stress about the digression in our society.  I like the happy part best, so I place the most energy there.
Our aquaculture system should be up and running within the month.  Hopefully, the rainwater feed will minimize the need for the pump system that will be in place.  Well let you know how well we succeed.....

                                                        ...oooOooo...

Now From GOArticles:With the tough economic circumstances were all facing, getting inexpensive and quality foods and products is a growing challenge for even the most experienced shoppers. Prices are through the roof to the point where it seems you have to spend a fortune to have a healthy diet. More inexpensive products are always of lower quality, this holds true for food as well. You can now get the best organic fruits, vegetables, and fish… plus save money at the same time! Where does this come from? It comes from your own farm…

                                                        ...oooOooo...

Well, Time has got away from me again. So until Friday Take really good care of yourselves (especially on the roads, and please no accidents if youre on holidays).
Bye 4 Now

Anyone want to do research on aquaponics

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds research on sustainable agriculture - up to $250,000 for multi-year projects. Most the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) grant pre-proposals were due 7/14, but the pre-proposals for the Northeast region arent due for another couple of weeks.

Id like to conduct a longitudinal study of how much the combination of a rocket mass heater and a subterranean heating/cooling system can extend the growing season, tracking temperatures and yields across numerous variables (USDA Zones, urban/suburban/rural, crops).

The bad thing is Im a federal employee during the day, so I can only conduct this research (and apply for a grant) as an individual. There are various laws that prevent me from representing another entity in receipt of federal funds. And I dont know if theyd let an individual conduct research on the scale Im interested in.

The other bad thing is Im so close to the deadline, and others who might be interested in doing something along these lines are on vacation.

The good thing is a UN-published study showed the underground heat exchange system (UHES) or subterranean heating/cooling system (SHCS) increased yield by 50% compared to an equivalent greenhouse that lacked the subterranean heating/cooling technology. John Cruickshank shares his experience with UHES/SHCS at his SunnyJohn website, saying:

...you can expect to raise the soil temperature to 65-75F by the end of the summer. That is the soil temperature of all the soil in the greenhouse to a depth of 3 feet!! You can expect to keep it cycling in that range for 3 months after the summer season before it begins to discharge seriously. That represents an enormous influence on the zone above it. For a 30 by 20 greenhouse I believe that is in the neighbourhood of 75 tons of soil and represents several million BTUs of heat. How this all pans out for season extension is a guess, but I assure you, it will extend your season!! For Zone 4, we can grow Eliot Coleman style in simple hoop houses for 12 months of the year using just a SHCS. Adding insulated north walls, double skins, propane CO2 generators and tighter building envelope we can grow tropically well for 10 months.

So if we add a rocket mass heater during the winter, to add BTUs to greenhouse soil during the short winter days, Im thinking it might be possible to enjoy "tropical" conditions year round in inexpensive hoop houses.

Anyway, let me know what questions you think USDA-funded research into integrated energy systems and aquaponics ought to answer!

Baby muscovy ducks

Our Muscovys have been producing eggs since spring and now, of all times, is when they decide to hatch them out; they certainly picked a funny season those silly little quackers. With fall just around the corner we still have enough time for them to grow, the only problem now, keeping walking bait away from the barn cats.
                                                                                    ?          ?
(,,?????,,)
                                                                                   ?          ?
????????????????????
As soon as they hatched the father duck wouldnt leave the coop, I thought it was just some nice gesture to the moma but boy was I wrong. So the next day I walked in and gave them some feed, then, out of nowhere, the male duck bends down and snaps up a little baby duck by the head.
WHAT THE!!

So after a little research I found out this can happen, the male might be trying to stay in his hierarchical position, so any new male competition is lunch, regardless of whether its his babies or not.

The interesting thing of all this is, one day, the moma duck looked like she had left the kids with the other duck, well call her auntie. I thought to myself (how nice), it almost seemed like some type of companion parenting, after all, it does take a village, right.
But soon I realized something was off. Whenever moma duck came around, auntie would hiss, then  start biting and I could tell auntie wasnt letting moma near her babies.
This must have been happening for a while as when I separated the babies from auntie, they chirped away very unhappily. Auntie did not want to give up those babies, she hissed at me, bit me twice and fluttered in my face with her wings. Im starting to wonder if maybe she doesnt think shes stealing them, maybe she thinks there her own for some reason?. not sure why all this happened, but very interesting to watch the drama unfold.
In the picture here is moma duck and babies. Moma is a blue eyed, all white Muscovy, with a very friendly attitude. Her sister on the other hand,......

The little yellow one was just stepped on by our new goat, it was terrifying.
I thought she was a goner. But she literately dusted herself off, pushed her wing back into place and went off hunting for bugs with the rest of the family. Not even a sign of hurt or shock. I figured Id give it a day or two to really know how she was doing and so far, shes a trooper.
The old nest. As soon as the young ones hatched she gave up on the old eggs.
