What a Wicked Wet Wednesday

Wonderful Watery Wednesday
Yes we are still getting regular downpours so we have plenty of water in the seven tanks (plus the bore water) But Really, How much water can a puddle hold...

Now, lets see what I can find to amuse all my friends this time around....

                                                        ...oooOooo...

Have you joined Aquaponic Garden yet? Well, heres one young man who has....

                                                        ...oooOooo...

It is not formidable to pattern a simple aquaponic complement which can be placed indoors or outdoors. The options ye have been to squeeze a readymade pack or get the components from your internal hardware plus hobby supply stores plus set up the section yourself.
What have been the components of a simple aquaponics system?

                                                        ...oooOooo...

In the middle of the semester, we became discouraged with our initial project.  We were starting to tackle a problem in our own lives, but felt we weren’t learning or exploring enough.  Around the same time, we came across Elle Sheiferstein’s Aquaponics project, Green Farmed Foods on youtube.  Elle came to Baltimore from New York initially to rehab old rowhomes and create housing.  When she came across the Old Augenbrack Beer Brewery she initially wanted to

From E-Zine Articles:
You can design an aquaponics at home system that can produce fresh organic vegetables and raise fish at the same time. Taking a lesson from fish farming otherwise known as aquaculture and the practice of raising plants without soil known as hydroponics a marriage of the two worlds are created to form aquaponics.
Aquaponics at home can be a very basic system designed to grow a small herb garden or an aggressive system designed to raise organic vegetables to feed an entire household.

Well, getting ready for some new catfish so we moved the aquarium outdoors to become the new Quarantine Aquaponics system.
We decided the big aquarium indoors was too much moisture for the house and we needed more storage space in the spare room. Well why not set it up outside? I did add a cover in front to keep the sun off the tank as the algae would otherwise have taken over and heated up the tank quickly.

It is not difficult to design a basic aquaponic system that can be placed indoors or outdoors. The options you have are to purchase a readymade kit or get the components from your local hardware and hobby supply stores and build the unit yourself.
What are the components of a basic aquaponics system?
  1. A fish tank with fish, the size you select will be determined by where you locate it and the scope of your system.
  2. A grow bed with plants, there is no limit here in terms of what you can grow, it will depend on your goals, the type of water flow and the space you have dedicated to the aquaponics system.
  3. A water pump and filtration system, it is vital that a perfect....

Sometimes, I know things like cycling a pile of gravel should work, but Im still surprised when they actually do.
After shovelling 3/4 of the gravel into my grow bed, I got lazy and went to bed. But I thought Id try getting a head start to cycling up my system as gravel in a grow bed, and a pile of gravel on the ground.

Some Videos from HOWSTUFFWORKS: The big trend in produce farming is to move it indoors and grow the plants hydroponically. This offers the same kind of advantages in terms of water consumption, weather and consistency, and also opens up the possibility of urban farming. Here is an example of an advanced hydroponic lettuce farm:

From Can You Feed Your Family With Aquaponics?
Thanks for all these great aquaponic links and ideas.  Thank you, Jag, for the film clip.  The man, Hobie, whom the speaker is most directly conversing is a long time friend of mine.  The plant he is featuring, taro, is an important one of our staples.
My favorite part of focusing my efforts and concerns on food production, is that it makes me happy.  Cultivating life around us, is so much more joyful and fulfilling than stressing about the rise of fascism and an impending economic collapse.  ... I do both, rejoice in the abundant biology around me and stress about the digression in our society.  I like the happy part best, so I place the most energy there.
Our aquaculture system should be up and running within the month.  Hopefully, the rainwater feed will minimize the need for the pump system that will be in place.  Well let you know how well we succeed.....

                                                        ...oooOooo...

Now From GOArticles:With the tough economic circumstances were all facing, getting inexpensive and quality foods and products is a growing challenge for even the most experienced shoppers. Prices are through the roof to the point where it seems you have to spend a fortune to have a healthy diet. More inexpensive products are always of lower quality, this holds true for food as well. You can now get the best organic fruits, vegetables, and fish… plus save money at the same time! Where does this come from? It comes from your own farm…

                                                        ...oooOooo...

Well, Time has got away from me again. So until Friday Take really good care of yourselves (especially on the roads, and please no accidents if youre on holidays).

Wet Sand Thermal Storage

The chart above would make water the holy grail of thermal storage.  But Im still looking for a complete equation that will show me how to build a balanced system that will take advantage of all the energy the solar collectors deliver.  I feel that it is important to consider the coefficient of transfer aka conductivity.  Im guessing that water has the best characteristics of both, but it has to transition through some sort of pipe..  Maybe Im just making this harder than it needs to be.
.
As an example of what Im saying.  How effective would it be to put 100000 sq ft of solar collector on Lake Superior?  Not very...  Also the transfer rate must be considered.   A material that can hold a million BTU is not effective if it cant transfer that energy back out.

Everything I read is so reticent about the design procedure.  Some questions I still have are:
  • Whats the optimal relation between the size of the collector and the storage?
  • Whats the optimal flow rate through the system and
  • What should the diameter and length of the pipes be?

Original Post - 2012-01-06

Im exploring wet sand thermal storage.  This drawing shows tubes which would carry the air from a solar collector through wet sand in a 3x3x12 box.

The ends of the pipes terminate inside of a 6" manifold on each end.
I need to do the math, but by comparing this system to others I estimate that if a 25F differential is attainable, it would store about 50,000 BTU of useable heat.

I have calculated that the night time losses will be about 15,000 BTU/Hr if the outside temperature drops to 20F, so I may need to make the system a bit larger, but this does not account for the thermal mass of the 400 gallon aquaponic system with 3/4 yards of gravel, which I will hold at 70F with an electric tank heater.  Hopefully the solar system will significantly reduce the requirements of the electric heater. and provide a buffer in case of electric failure.

Ill add to this post as I figure out more of the design, and requirements of the entire system. But these raw numbers seem to indicate that the environment would be controlled even on the coldest nights.

Heat in the Summer is also a concern, but an evaporation cooler will be able to maintain the air at less than 90F, and the thermal storage could be cooled during the night.  A 3/4" PEX pipe could be embedded in the cool sand and used during the day too keep the tanks cool, but the nighttime Summer temperature differential is not as large and may not provide a significant advantage.   I will continue look for answers, but after reading about this simple solar stock tank, I feel quite certain this design will work.

One of the problems I see with this design is the coefficient of heat transfer through the wall of the tubes.
In an effort to avoid this I have another design I want to run the numbers on.  The idea is to make stacking 16x16x8 Thermal Storage Blocks out of concrete.
Click here for my SketchUp Files
Update 2012.01.08
Ive had an idea.
To increase the conductivity and coefficient of thermal transfer in the Thermal Storage Blocks; metal filings could be added to the concrete... Just spinning my brain cells.  ;-)
 ---

To make these blocks PVC pipe could be wrapped in wax paper and placed in a form.  Concrete would then be poured into the form and later when the concrete has cured, the PVC pipes and wax paper would be removed.

These blocks could be stacked to create the thermal mass, and the holes would provide direct contact for the air arriving from the solar collectors.  I suppose ordinary cement blocks could be used, but these blocks would be engineered with less air space, and more concrete for a greater storage capacity per cubic meter.

I dont know if there is any advantage to wet sand over dry concrete,  but one other advantage I see to the blocks is that construction would be simpler because the manifold would not have to be water tight.

Friday and We are all a Bit Sick of this Weather

So I guess most of us are wondering what is the next weather installment. Well not me, Ive had all the weather I need. So Ill just sit here and get on with work:

It occurred to me a couple of days ago that I had never written anything reviewing my Friendly Aquaponics Commercial Training experience.  It was a profound four days in my life and yet I have never chronicled it.  I think I finally will now.

We arrived in Kona late Saturday night after grounded planes and nearly missed flights.  We were tired but excited as we drove from the airport up to Waimaia where we were staying.  Tomorrow we would go to the farm tour and then the class would start on Monday.  We slept well, but cold in the little Hawaiin hotel room with no heat.  It was dipping into the 40s there at night and we Florida girls were freezing!  The next morning we headed out for breakfast and to go to the farm tour.

The Wet Weekend Here Again

Yes the eastern seaboard of Australia is still recieving more than its share of water and I thought I might show a photo or two to give you some idea:

We have roughly a half a kilometer of winding road from the front gate to the house and the last 60 metres includes a bridge over a "CREEK". This creek normally has a trickle of water at most two metres wide by a few centimetres deep as it passes the house and that trickle is five metres below the bridge.

So......Here it is at 4.00pm today....:
The patch just behind the dog in the first image, is the far end of the bridge with water just passing over it.

Fortunately we can get to the Aquaponics area so work goes on, as it does here as well:

Aquaponics has been revolutionizing the way many gardeners are growing their own food, as well as some commercial food producers. What is aquaponics? Aquaponincs combines growing fish (aquaculture), with growing plants without soil (hydroponics).
This creates a mutually beneficial system that closely mimics natural cycles. The fish waste provides rich nutrients to the plants, while the plants remove the fish wastes from the water to create a healthy environment for the fish...

Aquaponics Starting Tips Hey Guys!

Here are some Beginners Startup Tips i came across while surfing the net.

Its very informative and would probably save us a lot of valuable time as well.
1) System type – Media bed is recommended for new, Hobby growers.
Why not NFT or Deep Water Culture (AKA raft or DWC)?
A media bed performs three (3) filtering functions;
1 mechanical (solids removal)
2 mineralisation (solids breakdown and return to the water)
3 bio-filtration
Because the media bed also acts as the place for plant growth...

What Is Aquaponics? And How Is It Revolutionizing the Way We Grow Food?

Author: AM Wilson
Many home hobbyists, gardeners, and commercial food producers are starting to discover the advantages of aquaponics. This revolutionary system is a way of producing both fish and vegetables, using a fraction of the water, and eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers, and virtually eliminates harmful wastes.
What is aquaponics? It is the combination of hydroponics and aquaculture. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants with their roots directly in water without soil. Aquaculture is the process of growing fish. Both of these types of systems can be very efficient, but there are disadvantages associated with both.

Sorry no pictures on this one, Growing Power doesn’t allow it.
First let me say that I think Growing Power is a wonderful organization and I love what they are doing in general. However, I don’t think people new to aquaponics should attempt their Aquaponics System design methods of growing fish.
It isn’t that their methods don’t work, because they are obviously working for Growing Power. However, when one without much experience with Aquaponics tries to mimic their methods and doesn’t get it exactly right, the results tend to be tragic.
Now I did not take one of their Aquaponics Workshops so I don’t know exactly...
